As bats whiz at my head, I grab Jun and run for the exit of the tunnel. It's like no matter what we do, this chick brings the darkness with her. Yeah, I've been pretending this ghosting shit isn't real, but I'm no dumbass. I know Jun isn't a big liar either. I just don't WANT it to be real.
"Run faster, Purple," I hiss as I grab her shoulder. She bites my hand but keeps moving beside me. I snatch my hand away from her, frowning. What the hell? I almost scream at her, but her body is trembling and her mouth is set in a grim line. I’ll save it for later, and bite her back when she least expects it.
"You guys behind us?" she asks is a wheeze.
"Right here, babe," Dex calls.
Light filters in from the exit and I breathe a sigh of relief. Once we are out of the cave, I drop to my knees and press my head to the ground. My heart is beating double time and the humidity in the air is stealing my breath. Looking toward the entrance, I see the shadow lurking in the dark recesses of the cave.
“Notice he always sticks to the shadows?” Sterling muses, but I have no patience right now to try to figure this creepy fucker out.
"Everyone move," I shout as I push at Jun again. She grumbles but lets me take her away from whatever the fuck that thing is without fighting me.
"Do not look back," I suggest as we jump down from the ledge and hit the trail running.
The only sound is the wheezing of breaths behind me, and the cracking of the leaves and twigs as we stomp through the forest. Even the birds have stopped chirping, I notice with a shiver. The sun is starting to set and all I can think is that we need to be gone before the shadow can exit the cave. If what Sterling said is true, once the sun goes down, all bets are off.
I slam the side of the Tahoe, waiting for Asher to unlock it using his remote. When the car beeps, I wrench the door open and lift Jun in before me. Once everyone is buckled in, Asher squeals the tires and steers us toward the campus.
"You all saw him. Did you hear him too?" Jun asks shakily while her hands clench mine. I can feel them tremble and clutch them tighter, grounding her as much as I am myself.
"Yeah, I heard it," I grumble. She gasps and looks at me with her mouth open. I frown and look the other way, refusing to say more right now.
"We all did, Juniper," Asher sighs and looks at us through the rear-view mirror. "I thought the bracelet was supposed to help."
"It is," she says as she lifts her wrist. I gasp, because while the bracelet is still there, the stone is gone. Jun lets out a small sob and buries her head in my chest.
"Where did the stone go? Was it there this morning?" I ask.
